Prenty calls for championship overhaul

Connacht Council secretary John Prenty would like to see the provincial football championships divided into four eight-team competitions.

Prenty favours the structure recommended by the Football Review Committee, but isn't holding out much hope of it coming into effect any time soon.

"You should have four eights in Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster and play away," the Mayo man is quoted in the Irish Daily Star.

"Every fella has a chance of winning a championship and if you win the All-Ireland fair play to you. The Shannon divides a lot of them. It'd be better, a streamlined championship if it happened.

"It could be a long time before it happens. The format could be that your Ulster championship and the preliminary round losers would come in here (Connacht). So if they were good enough to win the Ulster championship, they'd keep going, if not we'd give them a second chance. That'd be oe of the Ulster teams.

"Probably someone from the Leinster championship, from the preliminary rounds we would need a couple of them in here."

He added: "A Connacht championship medal to a player is a valuable piece of silverware and it is the same in the other provinces. But I believe we could improve the whole championship by having an even number in each province and going from there. It would certainly make more sense from a logistical point of view.

"If there was to be a change, my preferred option would be four eights. I said that before. But I fear I might be defeated 3-1."
