James Horan has ruled out the possibility of becoming Donegal's next senior football manager.

The former Mayo boss became the bookmakers' favourites to succeed Jim McGuinness yesterday, with odds from 33/1 going into 11/4 and Boylesports releasing a statement which read: "A flurry of bets have been placed on him on Monday morning in our northern bordering shops."

However, Horan has since dismissed the speculation and confirmed that he will be taking a break from management next year.

"That's the bookies for you. No, I won't be going for the Donegal job," Horan told The Irish News.

"I'm taking a break. I won't be going for the Donegal position. They're a serious footballing county, but I won't be going for it."

Last night saw the Donegal county board officially start their process for finding a successor to McGuiness and chairman Sean Dunnion paid tribute to the All-Ireland winning management for all that he has given to the Tir Chonaill County.

"During his time as manager, Jim McGuinness helped many people to get back into education and also helped people with mental issues," said Dunnion.

"There is some urgency with 2015 just around the corner and I believe that this is the reason Jim made his decision as quickly as he did."
