Keegan hits the high notes

Mayo's Lee Keegan. INPHO
Cillian O'Connor has recalled how he had been thinking of putting the ball over the bar until he heard Lee Keegan's "high-pitched voice" in the 23rd minute of yesterday's Connacht SFC final.

O'Connor cut in along the end-line and centred for the attacking wing back to flick the ball into the net and send Mayo on their way to a record-breaking 45th provincial title and first four-in-a-row since 1951.

"Lee is very loud when he's coming through, he was screaming in a high-pitched voice so you can't miss him," the former Young Footballer of the Year explained.

"I was thinking I was going to put it over, but then I heard him screaming, kind of like a girl's voice, so I popped it off to him.

"It's brilliant. I suppose it'll sink in now this evening, back for the August Bank Holiday weekend, that's where you want to be, and that's where we've played some of our best football.

"Nothing is going to be handed to you in Croker, it's going to go right down to the wire and the character and discipline we showed towards the end there will stand to us."
