Junior Hurling League (Genfitt Shield) Final
April 30, 2012
Tooreen B 0-15
Castlebar B 1-7
in Tooreen
Tooreen took their first piece of adult silverware of the season with this five point win over Castlebar on their home soil in Tooreen. A strong first half in which Tooreen shot eleven points with the aid of the wind was the foundation of the win, leaving Castlebar with too much to do in the second half.
A lively start to proceedings saw Tooreen take the lead early as Shane Boland opened the scoring closely followed by another home point from Ciaran Finn. Castlebars opener came from a dead ball from John Cotter - who was Mitchels main scoring threat throughout the hour. Tooreen made full use of the opening half breeze with Boland again, along with Joey Ganley and midfielder Sean Ganley all finding their range from distance. Castlebars replies all came from the stick of Cotter, to leave the score at 0-11 to 0-3 at the interval, in favour of the home side.
Castlebar had a mountain to climb on the restart, but it was Tooreen who pushed forward as Boland and Finn again put their side on a winning path. Castlebar did eventually find their scoring range but had to rely on the excellent free-taking of Cotter, while a Nathan O'Malley Castlebar goal with ten minutes remaining gave the county-town side some hope. However, the Tooreen defence stood firm through a late Castlebar onslaught, with Risteard Byrne and veteran Brian Delaney digging deep late on to keep Castlebar at bay. In the end, a Dylan Lynskey Tooreen pointed free drew a conclusuion to the game and was a fitting finish from the young players excellent hours hurling.
For Castlebar - they had fine displays all over the field - with 'keeper Darren Greaney assured whilst keeping a clean sheet. Sean Kelly and Bernard Kennedy battled hard in the Mitchels defence, while their attack was lead by Cotter and Nathan O'Malley - whose goal late on was excellently finished with style on the run.
Tooreen had their own youthful stars in scoring chiefs Shane Boland and Ciaran Finn, while their midfield pairing of Pat Freyne and Sean Ganley dominated the middle section. After the game, John Hopkins (Hurling Committee Chairman) presented the Genfitt Shield for the Junior Hurling League to Pat Freyne - captain of the Tooreen side.
