Drama reigns as Moy, Swinford clinch U14, 16 championships
September 02, 2010
Moy Davitts lifted the Mayo U14 A Championship crown at McHale Park, Castlebar last weekend at the end of an intensely dramatic decider against Claremorris.
The Claremorris lads had looked dead and buried when they trailed by 12 points on the day but amazingly exacted a 15-point turnaround to open up what looked like a winning lead (2-15 to 2-12) before the final whistle.
However, a stunning goal from Conor Byrne at the end of a flowing move sent the game to extra-time before a breathless attendance at McHale Park.
Shaken by that blow, Claremorris were unable to raise a renewed effort in extra-time, with nine unanswered points from the Moy boys sending the title Davitts' way.
Meanwhile, there was more drama in the U16 Championship decider as Swinford edged Ballina Stephenites on a 1-6 to 0-7 scoreline.
Swinford goalkeeper Darragh Campbell saved a first half penalty from Thomas Murphy but Ballina had loud claims for a second spot kick turned down in injury time at the end of the hour after Fergal Tully was felled inside the large square.
Referee Mel Kenny waved those appeals away and Swinford held out to claim the title.
