Tyrone came from behind to beat Mayo by 3-10 to 0-16 in a thrilling curtain-raiser at Croke Park.

The Red Hands trailed by seven points at one stage but scored three wonderful goals to book their place in the All-Ireland final against Galway or Cork.

Outsiders Mayo had the better of the first half to lead by 0-10 to 1-3 at half time. They were full value for that advantage, clipping over some fantastic long-range scores and landing seven points in succession to move clear.

Ronan O'Neill hit the post with a first-minute free before Jack McDonnell opened the scoring for Mayo with a tidy point at the other end. Fergal Durkan brilliantly won a Mayo free, which captain Cillian O'Connor tapped between the posts to make it 0-2 to no score after three minutes.

O'Connor stroked over another free from close range on five minutes. However, the sides were level in the eighth minute when Tyrone corner forward O'Neill scored a great goal. The Omagh lad gathered possession and shrugged off two challenges before slotting the ball into the corner of the net off the inside of his left foot: 1-0 to 0-3.

Raymond Munroe's charges moved ahead for the first time on 13 minutes when full forward John McCullagh split the posts with an excellent point. The ultra-dangerous O'Neill added a point when he had another brief glimpse of goal but the Ulster champions had wides from Thomas Canavan and Conan Grogan either side of that score.

There were three points between the teams when Richard Donnelly floated over a glorious point into The Hill from the right wing but Cian Costello - a late addition to the Mayo starting XV - pulled back a nice point for the westerners and it was back to a one-point game when centre forward Michael Forde pointed eight minutes from the break, 0-5 to 1-3.

A minute later, Mayo full forward Darren Coen levelled the scores with a fantastic score. Mayo now had the bit between their teeth and they were back in front when midfielder Danny Kirby picked out Coen, who boomed over a magnificent point from out the field.

Tony Duffy's men were kicking amazing points now and wing back Ryan Quirke was next to float over an absolute peach. The underdogs now led by 0-8 to 1-3. And their three-point cushion was restored when O'Connor ran around the Tyrone defence to knock over his third point two minutes from the short whistle.

McDonnell showed tremendous pace, composure and accuracy to tear through for his side's tenth point. McDonnell had opened and closed the first-half scoring and Mayo were worthy four-point leaders at the break.

Donnelly became the second Tyrone player to rattle the woodwork ten seconds after the restart. But there was no let-up in the super Mayo point-taking as O'Connor whacked over a sumptuous minor from a free to put the Connacht champions five points ahead three minutes into the second half.

Donnelly pulled back a point for the northerners but Coen replied immediately with his third point, this one via the upright off his left foot. When Jack McDonnell added his third score, the game looked done and dusted: 0-13 to 1-4 after 37 minutes.

Mayo's full forward line had now bagged ten points and it could have been more when O'Connor blazed a low shot across the face of goal. Tyrone's impact sub Darragh Donnelly then set up a goal chance for Ryan Devlin with a surging run, but the No.12's shot was diverted by Mannion onto a post and back into play. O'Connor rubbed salt in the wounds when he tagged on his fifth point, a lovely score from play: 0-14 to 1-4.

In the 43rd minute, Donnelly scored Tyrone's second goal - a screamer off his left foot into the top left corner. O'Neill almost added another three-pointer but his shot blazed a few inches over the bar for a point: 2-5 to 0-14.

That scoring burst from Tyrone left the game still delicately poised with three-quarters played and just three points between the teams.

The comeback was completed in the 48th minute when replacement Donnelly perhaps got away with a few steps too many and blasted an unstoppable shot to the net: 3-5 to 0-14. And an O'Neill free had the pre-match favourites back in the driving seat a minute later. Tyrone were two ahead when McCullagh knocked over a sublime point from a tight angle nine minutes from time.

Stefan Tierney pointed off the inside of the post when he was going for goal, putting Tyrone three ahead, but O'Connor pulled back a free five minutes from the end - 3-8 to 0-15. At the other end, Darragh Donnelly continued his major impact from the bench with a terrific point.

Sub James Shaughnessy had a slim chance of an equalising goal but his shot went a foot over the crossbar for a Mayo point, leaving two between them with a minute of normal time left. Three minutes of injury time were added…

Ronan O'Neill kicked a stunning Tyrone point in the first added minute. With seconds remaining, and just three points separating the teams, Mayo came looking for the equaliser and they were out of luck when Kirby's shot was blocked on the line by some desperate last-ditch defending.
