James Waldron, the chairman of the Mayo County Board, is eyeing an end to the uncertainty surrounding the vacant county manager's position.
Mayo have been on the look-out for a new boss since John O'Mahony stepped down in the wake of the county's All-Ireland qualifier exit at the hands of Longford in June.
County stars of the past such as Liam McHale (pictured), Noel Connelly, James Horan and Kenneth Mortimer have been linked with the job, while those with intercounty managerial experience said to be in the running have included former boss John Maughan, ex-Galway chief Peter Ford and Tommy Lyons, once of Offaly and Dublin.
The quarter-finals of the Mayo senior football championship are provisionally pencilled in for the weekend of August 28/29, and Waldron is hopeful that a new man is appointed before the end of that competition.
Quoted in the Mayo News, he said, "It would be nice to have a manager in place for the closing stages of the championship so they could have their selectors in place and do some scouting.
"We also have the FBD final in New York on October 12 and we would need a manager in place for that also."
