One quarter-final place up for grabs
August 13, 2010
The identity of seven of the eight quarter-finalists in the Mayo senior football championship are now known, with Breaffy and West Mayo going head to head for the eighth and final spot this Saturday (August 14).
Defending champions Charlestown booked their place in the last eight with an emphatic 11-point win over Westport last weekend.
Ballintubber and Crossmolina put up big tallies to qualify from Section 1, Castlebar Mitchels and Shrule/Glencorrib enjoyed comfortable wins over Aghamore and Moy Davitts in Section 2 to book their place in the last eight while last year's beaten finalists Knockmore were joined in the quarter-finals by Ballina Stephenites in Section 4.
The final spot is likely to go to Breaffy, who must do no more than avoid an eight-point defeat at home to West Mayo on Saturday night to keep their hopes alive.
Knockmore are regarded as favourites to lift the title for the first time in 13 years, marginally ahead of defending champs Charlestown while Castlebar and Crossmolina are also well fancied.
The draw for the quarter-finals will take place next week.
