Connacht MFC: Coen double inspires Mayo

July 19, 2010

Mayo's Conor Walsh and Peadar O'Griofa of Galway in action during the Connacht MFC final at Castlebar.
Darren Coen bagged 2-1 as Mayo won their third ESB Connacht MFC title on the trot at Castlebar yesterday.

Mayo 3-9
Galway 1-10

All three of the Mayo goals came in the second half after the sides had been deadlocked on 0-7 to 1-4 at the interval. Three frees in-a-row from captain Cillian O'Connor had the home side three points ahead before Paul Varley levelled for Galway in the 24th minute after dispossessing Mayo goalkeeper Paul Mannion and finishing to an empty net.

Substitute Peadar O Griofa then put Galway ahead before Sean Kelly brought Mayo level before the break.
O Griofa restored Galway's lead on the restart, but the holders never looked back after O'Connor was brought down for a penalty which Danny Kirby converted. Before Galway had a chance to recover from that setback, Coen hit two goals in quick succession to put the result beyond doubt.

Mayo will now face beaten Leinster finalists Offaly in the All-Ireland quarter-final, while Galway will face surprise Leinster winners Longford.
