Brennan blasts McHale Park surface

Dublin's Ger Brennan and Meath's Niall McKeigue collide as linesman John Bannon keeps an eye on events during the Leinster SFC.
Dublin's Ger Brennan has condemned the playing surface at McHale Park in Castlebar after his side's win over Mayo at the weekend, describing it as "awful".

Brennan praised the new set-up at Mayo's home venue, but was not pleased with the surface which both teams had to play on on Sunday.

"It was awful playing on that pitch. It is a lovely set-up with a lovely stand but they should have done something with the pitch first before you get your new stadium, that's my opinion anyway," said Brennan.

"I'm sure it is the same for the Mayo lads. It was very sandy. It was the same for both teams.

"I suppose we were just happy to get the performance," he added.

Meanwhile, the St Vincent's defender has said that he believes manager Pat Gilroy has been trawling the county for players with the right attitude, rather than great talent.

"If you look at my own college - Maynooth - we had 15 just above average players but we had the right attitude and we did fairly well by beating Jordanstown," said Brennan.

"I think 15 lads with the right attitude is better than 15 super-talented lads. I guess that is what Giller (Pat Gilroy) is looking for. He is looking for lads that will put in the effort and the work rate."
