Referees workshop a success

March 01, 2010
As part of the ongoing Referee Education Program within Mayo GAA, nine new whistlers underwent the Level 1 referee course to become inter-club referees recently. The combined football and hurling course saw six football and three hurling referees qualify.

It is hoped that all graduates will take charge of underage games within Mayo in the 2010 season, whilst also assisting with line duties in Senior, Intermediate and Junior championship games during the season.

The course was held over three nights - each night of 2 hour duration - with Sean MacEil (Connacht Referees Coordinator), Michael Nee (Connacht Referees Tutor) and Willie Feeley (Mayo Referees Coordinator) all parting their experiences of refereeing along the way.

As part of the newcomers integration into the Mayo Referees panel, the new recruits also took part in a Mayo GAA inservice night, where 67 referees from all over Mayo took part in a workshop in McHale Park presented by Michael Nee (Connacht Referees Tutor). The workshop proved very successful for all present, with 67 of the 82 members of the Mayo referees panel attending.

The Level 1 course and the inservice workshop was organised by incoming Mayo referees coordinator Willie Feeley (Claremorris), who took over the post this year after Sean MacEil (Knockmore) advanced to Chairman of the Connacht Referees Committee.
