Mark Ronaldson (1-6) produced an inspired performance as Mayo beat Tyrone by 1-12 to 1-11 in Omagh.

A goal and four points from Ronaldson helped the winners to a 1-6 to 1-5 lead at the break.

Andy Moran and Aidan Cassidy swapped the opening points in the third and seventh minutes respectively.

Eoin McCusker bagged a 14th-minute Tyrone goal after being set up by Brian McGuigan but a nice Ronaldson point kept the visitors in touch at 1-2 to 0-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The next four points were shared, with the impressive Ronaldson leading the way for Mayo. Ronaldson then converted a penalty to make it 1-6 to 1-4 to John O'Mahony's team.

Tommy McGuigan popped over the final score of the half to leave one between them at the interval.

McGuigan, Cassidy and McCusker were all on target for the O'Neill County before Enda Varley and Tom Parsons replied to level at 1-8 each with ten minutes played in the second half.

Mayo got four more to bring their run to six on the trot, with Varley, Ronaldson (2) and Andy Moran making it 1-12 to 1-8 with an hour gone.

Mickey Harte's men - who had gone 23 minutes without a score - then pulled back three points in a row from sub Peter Harte (free), Colm McCullagh and Kevin Hughes to leave just a point in it with a minute left of normal time.

Tempers became frayed with a mini melee as the match went into injury time and Tyrone's Joe McMahon got a straight red card, which also resulted in a Tyrone free being overturned.

Mayo held on tenaciously for a famous win. They have no won two out of two while the Ulster champions have lost both their outings in the competition to date.
