G.A.A DINNER DANCE: A HUGE SUCCESS
Ballintubber G.A.A Dinner Dance 2010 took place last Saturday fortnight and a hugely successful occasion was enjoyed by a very large crowd in excess of 330 persons. Once again the Castlecourt Hotel hosted the event in their usual professional manner and the highlight of the night was the numerous presentations with all the successful teams in 2009 being honored. A total of 60 players were in receipt of medals with success coming from the Ballintubber Senior team who won the Division 1B League title, the Junior team reclaiming the West Mayo Junior B Championship and the Under 21 team retained the top honor in the County, the "A" championship. The team Managements was also the recipients of special tributes on the night.
New Mayo under 21 Manager Ray Dempsey was present to individually give each player their respective medals and in a most eloquent speech he praised the Club on their tremendous success over the years and gave some wise words of advice on the path ahead.
The annual Player of the Year awards at Senior and Under 21 levels were announced and were selected by the players themselves. Cathal Hallinan won the "Senior Player of the Year" award for his highly consistent displays over the season while sturdy attacking centre back, Gary Loftus picked up the coveted Under 21 award with general agreement on the selection of both by their peers.
Then the Hall of Fame award recipient was also announced. Chairman Sean Hallinan announced the winner, Mickie Conroy, Clooneen, and he got the biggest cheer of the night as he collected the much coveted honor. He had another surprise as the County Junior medal he won in 1946 which he never received was also presented to him by the County Secretary, Sean Feeney. His grand- nephew, Michael also presented him with a beautiful compilation of pictures from the 1940s/50s era which illustrated his distinguished playing career.
A Special draw on the night for all those present took place with top class prizes. Patricia Jennings won the first prize and she selected a weekend for 2 in the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet, Tommy O'Toole won the next prize and he selected the All-Ireland Football Final tickets for next September. The next prize winner was Mary Louise McDonald who selected a pair of Rugby tickets for a 6 Nations match with both Marie Finnerty and Pat Gavin both winning 2 tickets each for separate Manchester United Premiership games at Old Trafford with the final prize of Gym Membership 2010 in Ballintubber Resource Centre won by P.J. Derrig. The music played on the night was by Reflex and a great night was had by all. Pictures will be posted on to the Photo Gallery on the club website over the coming weeks. The occasion reflected the buoyant mood of the club who eagerly anticipate the oncoming 2010 season.
