All-Ireland Masters final: Mayo take title

December 20, 2009
A second half goal from Johnny Leonard proved crucial as Mayo regained the All-Ireland Masters Football title following a four-point victory over Tyrone at Abbeylara, Co. Longford yesterday. Mayo 1-8 Tyrone 0-7 Tyrone looked to be in a strong position at half-time when they led by 0-6 to 0-4, but thanks mainly to a strong defensive performance, Mayo restricted them to just a single point in the second period while tagging on 1-4 themselves. The sides were level four times in the first half before Tyrone went in ahead at the break. But Leonard's goal early in the second half put the Westerners in front and they went from strength to strength after that to take the title. Scorers - Mayo: J Leonard 1-2, K Gallagher 0-2 (2f), MJ Walsh, P Jordan N Stagg (f), G Butler 0-1 each. Tyrone: E Kavanagh 0-3 (3f), F Gormley, H Quinn, J McElholm, V Owens 0-1 each.
