Corofin captain Kieran Comer raises the Connacht SFC Cup
Corofin 2-14 Charlestown 0-7 Kieran Comer hit 1-7 from full forward as Corofin retained their Connacht SFC club title with a comfortable victory over Charlestown at Fr O'Hara Park, Charlestown yesterday. Comer only returned from a golfing trip in Portugal on Saturday night to inspire the holders to a hugely impressive win. With St. Gall's enjoying a similarly comfortable victory in Ulster, their All-Ireland semi-final clash on February 21 promises to be a cracker. Putting the home side under enormous pressure from the start, the Galway champions were in the driving seat within four minutes thanks to Comer's opening goal. Charlestown, to their credit, battled back and trailed by just three points - 0-4 to 1-4 - at the interval thanks to quick scores late in the half from Paul Mulligan and Richard Haran. Playing with the aid of the strong wind in the second half, Corofin took complete control and reeled off six unanswered point during the third quarter to end the game as a contest. Comer, who was a member of Corofin's 1998 All-Ireland winning side, accounted for four of those scores (three from frees) while the excellent Joe Canny chipped in with two. With a minute of normal time remaining, Gary Sice applied the coup de grace by firing home Corofin's second goal.
