Staunton leads Ladies to Connacht decider
June 25, 2009
A five-star performance from Cora Staunton saw Mayo thrash Leitrim last Saturday and book their place into the TG4 Connacht SFC final on a scoreline of 6-22 to 2-8.
The Westerners' sharpshooter shot two first-half goals along with a handful of points to help her side into an unassailable 4-11 to 1-4 half-time lead, before completing her 4-13 tally for the day in the second-half, which left Leitrim in a daze.
Other scores from Triona McNicholas, Fiona McHale and Emma Mullin contributed to Leitrim's downfall, but Staunton performance was simply mesmerising.
"Cora is phenomenal," said Leitrim manager, Frank Browne.
"I feel sorry for Sharon Kerrigan, because she's marking someone we're never going to see in our time again, but also we were leaving her very exposed, because the quality of ball going in was so good and there was oceans of space to run into."
