Fixture backlog on the cards

June 18, 2009
It may only be June, but the Mayo GAA fixtures committee could be heading for a fixtures' backlog following the release of games for the under-21 championship. The timing of the first two rounds of the under-21 championship have caused concern among some clubs as they have been fixed either side of the second round of the SFC which is due to be played on the weekend of July 4th. Also thrown into the mix is a full round of senior league matches on June 28th, which means that some players could be playing five competitive matches in 13 days. The County board has stated that the matches had to be fixed that way in case Mayo reach the Connacht senior and minor finals, but this has fallen on deaf ears from some of the clubs.
