O'Mahony accuses Minister of causing 'confusion'

Former Mayo manager John O'Mahony
Mayo senior football manager and Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony has accused Sports Minister Martin Cullen of causing nothing but confusion with his comments over the future of the players' grant scheme. Cullen told the Dail on Tuesday that the Government no longer had the money to fund the EUR3.5 million scheme, only to row back yesterday by insisting the scheme was not about to be scrapped. The Minister, who has sought a meeting with GPA next week, stated that he "had a number of ideas" for how the funding might be continued, but refused to elaborate on what they might be and also on where the money might come from. "Even since the Minister appeared in the Dail yesterday, nothing but confusion has surrounded the players' grant scheme," O'Mahony said. "For 24 hours, allegations have been thrown about that the scheme is to be abolished after the Minister refused to guarantee its full retention in the Dail. He must make a statement outlining the status of the grants and where he sees their future."
