Staunton regrets dismissal
November 12, 2008
Mayo ladies football star Cora Staunton has apologised over her reaction to being sin-binned in the closing stages of Carnacon's All-Ireland club semi-final win over Monaghan's Donaghmoyne last Sunday.
The celebrated forward received a yellow card after reacting inappropriately to her direct opponent after she was awarded a free. As referee Keith Delahunty showed her the yellow card, she had to be calmed by team-mate Martha Carter and Carnacon manager Jimmy Corbett before she kicked the ball away in frustration.
The Ladies Gaelic Football Association are expected to receive the referee's report today, and depending on its content, Staunton could be requested to appear before the Central Disciplinary Committee. However, it's highly unlikely that she will be suspended for the All-Ireland final against Inch Rovers of Cork on November 23.
The multiple All-Star winner said she regretted reacting the way she did: "I was being pulled and dragged and I shouted 'yes' after winning the free.
"The referee came over, showed me a yellow card and I was sent to the sin-bin. It wasn't a good way to react and I shouldn't have reacted the way I did."
