It has become an all too common sight as clubs struggle to field at underage as Mayo side Ballyhaunis become the latest outfit to highlight their problem.

The Western People reports that for the first time ever the club has no teams at under-14 or 16 level in football.

They have been unable to field in these grades in hurling for the past few years, but the fact they are not represented at this level in football has spurred the club into calling a special meeting to discuss the issue.

A spokesperson for the club told the Western People that there is just a lack of numbers in the area.

“The numbers are not there. We don’t have big families like we had years ago and we’re struggling to field teams,” said the spokesperson.

Ballyhaunis, the club of county star Keith Higgins, will hold the meeting in their clubhouse on Thursday night (August 29th) at 9.30pm.
