2017 Footballer of the Year Andy Moran has announced his intercounty retirement.

Speaking with Richie Sadlier on the Second Captains podcast the 35-year-old said that his days in a Mayo jersey were at an end.

"My career is finished as of yesterday really," said Moran.

"I had a conversation with James yesterday. I let him know that it was finished. I'm now re-focusing and my mind is clear.

"I left the whatsapp groups last night. Some great friends, some great memories. It sounds silly but that was the toughest moment of the lot."

A two time All Star winner, Moran was part of the Mayo sides that came so close to All-Ireland glory only to lose out in finals to Donegal in 2012 and Dublin in 2013, 2016 and 2017, with the last three finals all lost by a single point. He also played in the 2004 and 2006 final loses to Kerry, appearing in both games off the bench.

He made his debut in 2004 and played in 85 championship games for the county, winning eight Connacht titles and a national league.
