'We don't even know if the rule changes are in for the league yet'

James Horan has labelled as 'crazy' the fact that county teams still don't know if the playing rules which are currently being trialled in the pre-season competitions will  remain in place for the Allianz League.

The five experimental rules will be reviewed by Central Council on January 19 before the Allianz League gets underway the following weekend.

"I've said it before, I think it's very tough on refs what we're trying to get them to do," Horan told the Western People after his first game back in charge of Mayo resulted in an historic penalty shootout win over Leitrim yesterday.

"Refs who are trying to read a game and see something in the corner of their eye have to county hand passes, it's very tough on them. It's a tough game to ref as it is, so when you throw all this on top of it, I'm glad I'm not refereeing.

"We don't even know if they (the rule changes) are in for the National League yet, if it's five rules or two or what rule is in or out, and that's crazy. But there's no point in giving out about it too much, we'll just see what happens."
