Stephen Rochford has poured cold water on speculation that the players had a role to play in his departure as Mayo senior football manager.

The rumour mill has been in overdrive ever since the Crossmolina man announced his resignation last Monday evening.

He cited a lack of support from the powers-that-be as the reason behind his decision and, speaking to RTÉ Sport yesterday, he said he doesn't believe the players wanted him to go.

"I don't think so," he commented.

"The reality is that I've had a lot of phone calls, text messages from the player group this week.

"The Mayo players, every day they went out, went out and gave it everything and it was no difference the last day against Kildare in Newbridge."
