It was a game that more than lived up to the hype and justified Kildare's insistence of having it played in Newbridge.
Four days after claiming a victory over the GAA by getting their All-Ireland football qualifier against Mayo moved from Croke Park to St. Conleth's Park on the basis that they were entitled to home advantage, the Lilywhites pulled off an even bigger victory this evening when they sent the All-Ireland finalists of the last two years packing from the championship.
On Twitter, Kildare supporters were understandably euphoric while Mayo fans were left wondering if their two-point defeat finally spells the end for this team.
Imagine trying to take this away from GAA, Saturday summer nights in the provinces, home advantage. What a game, people are crying, Kildare delivered tonight. Mayo, one of the most admirable teams ever, went out on their sword. Kildare had energy off the bench a d composure 21-19 pic.twitter.com/T4sdgMdhmm

Might be the end for Stephen Rochford, far from the end for Mayo.

In a few years time there'll have been more in Newbridge than there was in Thomond Park 40 years ago! Great energy from Kildare.
