James Horan got his reign as Westport manager off to the best possible start yesterday.

Taking charge of a club side in his native county for the first time since 2010, the ex-Mayo manager guided last year's All-Ireland club intermediate champions to an impressive 2-12 to 0-8 Mayo IFC victory over Crossmolina. Despite being without the injured Lee Keegan, Westport were always in control with Lewis Cawley and Fionn McDonagh scoring goals in either half.

Meanwhile, Castlebar Mitchels opened their SFC defence with a 2-18 to 1-6 drubbing of Ballina Stephenites. Neil Douglas and Danny Kirby scored 1-4 and 1-2 respectively as the champions began their bid for a four-in-a-row of Moclair Cups in fine style.

Elsewhere, last year's runners-up Ballintubber beat Davitts by 1-13 to 1-9, despite missing the injured Cillian O'Connor. There were also wins in the SFC for Garrymore, Claremorris, Charlestown, Ballaghadereen and Breaffy, for who Conor O'Shea hit 1-5 in a 1-15 to 1-12 victory over Kiltane.
