Hunterstown Rovers club notes

Hunterstown Rovers got their Championship campaign underway in Pairc Ui Taibh, Tallanstown against Dundalk Young Irelands on Sunday 17th July, in perfect sunny conditions. Dundalk Yound Irelands were hoping to top their group after a 1 point win over Glyde Rangers the previous week. 

 

Hunterstown Rovers got off to the better start scoring 1-01 in the opening 5 minutes. Richard Taaffe opened the scoring with a well taken point, followed immediately by a great goal from Brendan Lennon. Hunterstown proved to be the more dominant team throughout the whole first, with some great defending and attacking play. Hunterstown Rovers notched up 2 more points from the boots of Brendan Lennon and Keith Brennan, giving Rovers a lead of 1-04 to 0-00. It wasn't until the 15th minute that Young Irelands registered their first point of the the game. However Rovers built up some great momentum and scored 4 points without reply from Young Irelands, leaving the score at 1-08 to 0-02, with 5 minutes left in the 1st half. Young Irelands finally broke through Rovers tight defence to get their first goal of the game, before half-time.

Dundalk Young Irelands got off to the better start in the 2nd half scoring 3 quick points to close the gap between them and Hunterstown Rovers. Both teams exchanged points  for the next few minutes, leaving the score at 1-12 to 1-08 with 15 minutes left. Tensions began to show for both teams as Hunterstown wanted to secure the first win in the group and Young Irelands wanted to win the group. It was in the 49th minute that both Muiris O'Suilleabhain and Derek Maguire were given their marching others from the referee with 2 red cards. Both teams were then fighting tooth and nail fro the next 10 mins, until Hunterstown were dealt another blow as Keith Brennan was also shown a red card in the 53rd minute, reducing Rovers to 13 men. Young Irelands secured 

2 more points with out any reply from Rovers. Young Irelands were also reduced to 13 men when Gerry Nixon was shown a red card in the 61st minute. For the next 3 minutes Hunterstown did everything they could to prevent Young Irelands from securing a win.

Hunterstown Rovers Bingo is on this Friday evening at 8pm in the Ardee Parish Centre. There are some great cash prizes to be won including the winner takes all flyer and the jackpot. 

 

Congrats to our senior mens team on their first win of the championship against Dundalk Young Irelands in Pairc Ui Taibh, Tallanstown on Sunday afternoon. Our mens team are up against Glyde Rangers in their final match of the group. That match is on Saturday 23rd July at 18:15pm in Castlebellingham. 

 

 Best of luck to our U16 Girls who are in the league semi-final on Tuesday evening against St.Marys in Hunterstown.
