Division 2 O'Raghallaighs v Dundalk Gaels

June 27, 2016

On Saturday evening, Dundalk Gaels travelled to the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda to take on the O'Raghallaighs. With both teams having being relegated last year from Division 1 and also drawn together in the group stages of the senior championship it promised to be an enthralling affair. The Gaels started brightest and opened up an early lead with half back David Moloney contributing with 2 early scores from play. With the home side playing a a very defensive formation, the Gaels probed for weaknesses and following some great inter-play, Derek Crilly broke through the home sides rear-guard and placed his shot in the bottom corner of the net to give the Gaels a commanding lead of 1-5 to no score. The home side would eventually get off the mark before half time with a brace of points. The Gaels continued to show their scoring prowess before the break and went in at half time on a lead of 1-8 to 0-2.

The Gaels now had the wind in the second half, and they continued where they left off in the first half to ensure the scoreboard kept ticking over. While not as high scoring as the first half, there was some entertaining football from both sides. The home side were in need of goals to try and close the deficit but they were unable to threaten the Gaels goals. At the other end, both Sean Fee and Gerard McSorley were denied when one on one by with the Rats goalie. Gaels did rattle the net in the second half but unfortunately for them it came via an attempted hand pass so it was ruled out. The final scoreline was 1-14 to 0-4 in favour of the Dundalk side. With both sides due to meet again shortly in the group stages of the Championship, they will both have learned alot from this encounter. The Gaels now turn their attentions to local rivals Dundalk Young Irelanders who they play on Friday night and they continue to push for promotion back to Division 1.
