O'Donnell Cup semi-finals: Pat's and Dreadnots to meet again

November 19, 2014

St Patricks and Dreadnots will meet in the Cardinal O'Donnell Cup Final on Sunday after coming through their semi-finals on Tuesday evening.

The Clogherhead men recorded a 1-11 to 1-7 win at home to Kilkerley Emmets while the Pats scored a 1-14 to 1-9 victory over Newtown Blues in Lordship to set up a repeat of the Senior Championship Final.

The game in Lordship saw the Blues take an early lead through Hugh McGinn but that proved to be their only score of the half as the Pats dominated with the wind in their backs.

A Karl White goal on ten minutes put his side 1-4 to 0-1 ahead but it wasn't until the closing stages of the half that points from Eoin O'Connor and Paddy Keenan (2) extended the gap to 1-7 to 0-1 at half time.

The Blues gave themselves hope early in the second half when a John Kermode goal saw the gap reduced to 1-8 to 1-3.

However, the Pats fired over four quick-fire points to regain control of the game at the end of the third quarter.

The Blues battled gamely and saw McGinn and Robert Carr share the next five points to bring the gap back to 1-12 to 1-8. They were unable to get the goal required and late scores from Evan White and Aidan McCann settled the issue.

In the game at Clogherhead, Dreadnots were boosted by an early goal from Anthony Williams but it was Kilkerley who had the better of the exchanges and points from Shane Lennon (2) and Donal McElroy had them level.

Daniel McKeown then hit the net to put his side in front but four pointed frees from James Califf (2) and Pepe Smith (2) saw the Dreadnots lead by 1-4 to 1-3 at half time.

Colin Kelly's side edged ahead in the second half but Shane Lennon's free-taking kept his team in touch as they trailed by just 1-9 to 1-7 entering the closing stages. But it was the Dreadnots who finished stronger and points from Liam Shevlin and Ronan Fitzpatrick secured the victory.
