IFC semi: Fechins impress as Glyde put to the sword

ST FECHINS 0-11

GLYDE RANGERS 0-3

St Fechins are through to the Intermediate Championship Final after recording an eight-point victory over Glyde Rangers in Clan na Gael Park on Friday night.

The Termonfeckin side went into the game as strong favourites and although they justified that position, they did have to overcome a sticky patch either side of the break before doing so.

The Fechins began in impressive fashion and kicked the first six points, but a lapse in concentration before half time saw that gap reduced to three.

The opening ten minutes of the second half proved a rather tense affair, but once Ronan Holcroft kicked the all-important first score of the half, they result was never in doubt.

Thomas McNamee's side now await the winners of the second semi-final between St Josephs and Sean O'Mahonys which takes place on Thursday night.

The quick movement and link up play saw the Fechins take control from the early stages with Jamie King and Brian Devlin kicking early scores before the impressive Niall Devlin crashed a shot off the crossbar for another point.

Devlin, Holcroft and Harry McCarthy made it 0-6 to no score with only 17 minutes on the clock and it was looking very comfortable at that stage.

However, they failed to kick on in the second quarter and Glyde were given a chance to stay in the game which they took thanks to three pointed frees from Trevor O'Brien, Niall Sharkey and Ciaran Sheridan in the final three minutes, leaving it 0-6 to 0-3 at the break.

Glyde played with a bit more confidence in the second half but were unable to get the crucial first score.

St Fechins were struggling to click into their rhythm in the opening ten minutes but Holcroft's free on 40 minutes settled them and four points inside the next six minutes from Duffy (2), Holcroft and McCarthy had them firmly in control with a 0-11 to 0-3 advantage.

The final quarter produced little in the way of entertainment as Glyde just didn't have the numbers in attack to put any real pressure on the Fechins defence, with the south Louth men holding out for a comfortable win.
