Division 1 Round Up

July 07, 2014
St Patricks made it seven wins from seven outings when they proved too strong for O Raghallaighs in Lordship, eventually coming out with a 1-16 to 1-4 victory.

The Pats weren't at their best in the opening half and it took them 12 minutes to get off the mark. However, by the interval they had built up a 0-5 to 0-3 lead. The home side then upped the pace as a Danny O'Connor goal saw them score 1-3 without reply. Andrew Rogan hit the net for the O Raghallaighs but the Pats hit eight points in the final ten minutes to seal the win.

Pepe Smith was the hero for the Dreadnots as he landed 11 points to help his side overcome the disappointment of losing the Paddy Sheelan Cup Final and remain second in the table. The Clogherhead side took command of the game from the early stages and at the break held a 0-8 to 0-4 lead. After a slow start to the second half the Blues hit back to leave just a goal between the teams in the closing stages but they were unable to bridge the gap and the Dreadnots held out for a 0-16 to 0-12 win.

O'Connells also remain joint second in the table after a late goal from Ciaran O'Brien helped them to a 2-10 to 1-10 win over Cooley in Fr McEvoy Park on Saturday night. A goal from a Jackie Agnew penalty in the first quarter helped the O'Connells got into the break with a 1-5 to 0-4 advantage. In a close second half, a Darren Marks goal helped Cooley get back on terms but it was O'Brien who secured the points for his team with a late strike.

Kilkerley Emmets are also level on eight points in second place after they survived a late rally from Naomh Mairtin to win by 1-13 to 1-12 at Monasterboice. The visitors were in dominant form in the first half and with Shane Lennon scoring the opening goal of the game they had built up a 1-10 to 0-5 lead at half time. However, the Mairtins refused to give up and gradually dragged themselves back into the game. JP Rooney gave them hope when his goal left just a point between the teams but time ran out before his side could complete the comeback.

A late goal from a Shane O'Hanlon penalty helped Geraldines pick up a valuable point as his side forced a 2-8 to 1-11 draw with Dundalk Gaels at the Ramparts. Michael Rogers hit an early goal to give his side a confidence boost and they were looking good when they led by 1-5 to 0-6 at half time. The Gaels came back strongly and with the aid of a Gerard McSorley penalty goal they led by three entering the closing stages. O'Hanlon then scored from the spot before Niall Hearty and Stephen Reidy exchanged points to leave the game level.

Meanwhile, Sean O'Mahonys moved off the foot of the table when they scored an important win over Mattock Rangers. Niall McLoughlin hit two goals while Ronan Byrne and Liam Dullaghan also hit the net in the 4-7 to 0-9 win that saw Mattock lose for the second successive game.
