Having captured the Special Hurling League title the previous week with victory over Knockbridge, the hurlers of Mattock Rangers remained on course for the double when they qualified for the Semi Final of the Special Hurling Championship with victory over Naomh Moninne in the quarter final played in Collon last Friday evening (May 17).

The home side got the perfect start when Peter Mullen netted from close range in the opening 60 seconds. His side then accounted for five points in a row which included two pointed frees from top scorer Johnny Matthews.

Moninne struck back with three successive points from Ronan Geoghegan before a late point from the impressive Paddy Coyle had Mattock leading by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.

The Dundalk side struck with a goal of their own on the resumption from Ronan O Reilly but the Collon outfit effectively secured their semi final place with further goals from Matthews, Coyle and Michael Callan. Their opponents did manage a late consolation goal from a 20 metre free by Ronan Geoghegan but it is Mattock who go on to meet Pearse Og in the semi finals.

Both Semi Finals of the Louth Special Hurling Championship (Maurice Murphy Cup) are down for decision this weekend. First up on Thursday night (May 23) is the clash of Mattock Rangers and Pearse Og in Collon at 7.15pm. The second semi final then goes ahead on Sunday morning (May 26) with holders Knockbridge taking on St Fechins in Pairc an Chuinnigh (Knockbridge) at 11am.
