U14: Mellifont Rovers v St. Patricks
April 29, 2012
Mellifont Rovers 5-05 St Patrick's 1-03
This U14 Div 2 league match was played in extreme wet and stormy conditions on Tuesday evening last in Hunterstown. Despite the poor weather, both teams served up a wonderful game of competitive football. Mellifont elected to play with the elements in the first half and despite dominating the early exchanges, fell behind to a well taken goal by St Pats. Mellifont then opened their account with a well taken point by Shane De Courcey. Spurred on by this, Jason McKeown breached the St Pats rearguard to finish to the corner of the net. Both teams battled well but Mellifont dominated and were rewarded by a goal from Sean Clarke, two points from McKeown and a tidy point from Desmond Jibona. This left Mellifont ahead by 2.04 to 1.00 at half time. The hardy souls on the sideline were left to wonder if this lead was big enough to stay ahead of the expected St Pats onslaught.
The second half began with an early point from St Pats after good pressure from their midfield. However Mellifont started to play some delightful football, carrying and passing the ball well. This purple patch resulted in fine goals taken by Aaron McCabe and Nathan Murphy. Mellifont, encouraged by this, imposed themselves on the St Pats players and their fitness in the heavy conditions came to the fore. Pats then scored two well taken points but McKeown then replied with an easy free in front of goal. Mellifont then completed the scoring when Nathan Murphy forced home the ball after a goalmouth scramble.
Great credit must be given to both teams for serving up such entertainment on a miserable night.
