Gerry Morgan Memorial Cup Report

On Saturday August 31st, O’Raghallaighs GFC hosted its annual Gerry Morgan Memorial Cup and Shield for under 11’s.

Ten clubs from across the county competed, Newtown Blues GFC, St. Fechins GAA, St. Nicholas GFC, Wolfe Tones GAA, Glen Emmets GAA, Naomh Mairtin GFC, Glyde Rangers GAA, Dreadnots GAA, O’Raghallaigh’s GFC and Stabannon Parnells GAA. The clubs were drawn into 2 groups and the winners and runners up went on to compete in the Trophy and Shield finals.

It was an amazing day that started at 11am with summer sunshine and the arrival of all the participating teams. After the event briefing, games got underway at 11:30am. Each of the group games consisted of 2 halftimes of 7mins each. Each team did their club proud, playing it out with the other teams to see who would be going forward for the Cup and Shield.

O’Raghallaigh’s GFC finished top of their group A and St Fechins GAA from their group B to meet for a nail bitting finish in the final for the Cup. The game went to extra time as both teams were level. During the extra time of 3mins in each half, O’Raghallaighs emerged the winners.

Glen Emmets GAA and Niamh Martins GFC, the runners up in both groups A and B, played it out for the Shield. An excellent performance of great skill was demonstrated with Glen Emmets GAA winning the game at the final blow of the whistle.

On behalf of our organising committee, Dave Floyd, Stephen Dullaghan U11s Coach, & Assistant Club Secretary Danny O’Brien, we would like to thank our members and volunteers and especially all the young girls and boys who made this a very special day. Go Raibh Maith Agat.
