SFC: Craven the late, late hero for Gers

July 09, 2018

Glen Trainor - Geraldines

GERALDINES 0-10

ST PATRICKS 0-9

James Craven was the hero for Geraldines as he landed a late point to help snatch a dramatic victory over St Patricks in this Senior Championship clash at St Brigid's Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Pats looked to be on course for the victory when a Cathal Grogan point had them two clear with five minutes on the clock. However, the Gers were given hope when the Pats lost Ross Murphy to a second yellow and they took full advantage when points from Craven and Shaun Callan levelled matters before Craven struck the winner.

In what was a cagey game throughout, it was the Haggardstown side who had the better start with points from Josh Arrowsmith and Conor Rafferty. The Pats responded well with four in succession from Evan White, Danny O'Connor and Gavin Gregory (2).

In a half where defences were on top there was just one further point in the opening period as a free from Michael Rogers cut the gap to 0-4 to 0-3 at half time.

The Geraldines were hampered by the loss of Jim McEneaney and Conor Rafferty to injury and it appeared that the Pats were taking control when further scores from O'Connor and Cathal Grogan had them leading by 0-7 to 0-4. However, the Gers proved that they were in no mood to give up and hit back to level through Rogers, James Corrigan and Conal Hoey.

Once again the Lordship men found a response and looked to have the victory sewn up when they went two points clear, but were unable to finish the job as the McGeough Park side snatched the win.
