HL final: Mattock clinch title at Craobh Rua's expense

June 22, 2018

Mattock Rangers (Louth) 1-14

Craobh Rua (Camlough, Armagh) 1-4

A stronger, more efficient Mattock Rangers proved that little bit too adept in most departments, particularly in picking off scores, for Craobh Rua, in what was a fairly low-key and at times scrappy enough affair, that was played in excellent conditions in Inniskeen on Thursday evening last, to clinch the Silver Hill Farm Development Hurling League title and deny Craobh Rua victory in the final for the 2nd year in a row.

Mattock Rangers were only headed once in the entire contest and that after 4 minutes when Craobh Rua found the Mattock Rangers net but for the remainder of the half the Louth team dominated play and went on to lead by 6 points at half-time, 1-7 to 1-0. Things became a bit more competitive on the resumption with Craobh Rua, enjoying their best spell midway through the 3rd quarter but Mattock Rangers soon found their rhythm again and they clinched victory with 4 unanswered points between the 14th and 29thminutes to run out winners with 10 points to spare. A feature of the winners line out was that corner forward Tony Corcoran contributed substantially at 55 years young and was replaced in the second-half by his son Brian, who also got on the score sheet.
