Longford impress against Wicklow

Goal-hungry Longford are through to the last eight courtesy of a 4-13 to 1-5 demolition of Wicklow at Newtowncashel.

Frank McNamee's charges will meet Louth in the quarter-finals, the Wee County just about squeezing past Carlow elsewhere tonight.

The hosts led by 1-7 to 0-3 at the break, gradually taking control of proceedings after corner forward Larry Moran supplied their opening goal.

After the first two points were traded as the sides felt each other out, the midlanders edged ahead and Emmet Og's Moran found the net in the tenth minute to make it 1-2 to 0-1.

The winners hit five of the next seven points to lead by seven at the short whistle.

Corner back Conor Shields' goal gave the home team an ideal start to the second half and the gap was out to a massive thirteen points, 3-7 to 0-3, with 20 minutes left to play, Before the end of the third quarter, Longford had the ball in the net for the fourth time.

With the match over as a contest, there was no danger of player burn-out in the closing 15 minutes.
