Jack Sheedy is expected to be handed a second year in charge of the Longford footballers.

The former Dublin midfielder's reappointment looks a formality after he met with county board officials in the past week and was in attendance at recent county championship games.

Sheedy's future with the midlanders had been shrouded in doubt after their All-Ireland qualifier thrashing by Tipperary a few weeks ago. Appointed as manager in succession to Glenn Ryan last October, the Lucan man couldn't prevent Longford from making the drop to Division 4 of the Allianz League in the springtime.

However, they put that disappointment behind them to beat Offaly in the Leinster SFC for the first time since the 1960s before losing to bogey side Wexford in the next round.

Longford then caused one of the shocks of the championship when they beat Allianz League Division 1 finalists Derry in the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers before suffering a humiliating 17-point loss to Tipperary.

"No definite decision has been made yet, but that's the plan," Longford chairman Brendan Gilmore said of manager's likely reappointment in the Longford Leader.

"We have to go through the usual procedures in bringing it to the executive and then it has to be approved by the county board committee."
