The death took place this week of former Longford footballer Noel Caslin, who was a founder member of the famous Longford Slashers club.

Noel, who ran a successful restaurant in the midlands town until the 1990s, formed Slashers along with the late Tommy O'Brien in 1954 following the amalgamation of Longford Wanderers and Whiterock Slashers. Slashers have since established themselves as the most successful GAA club in Longford, having won the Connolly Cup for a record 16th time at the expense of Dromard last October.

Noel served the club in a variety of capacities, including chairman, secretary, treasurer, president and as a player. He was also instrumental in purchasing the site in 1977 which was to become Slashers' home ground of Michael Fay Park.

A native of Rooskey, Noel played minor football for Roscommon in 1949 and '50 before moving to Longford. He played senior football for Longford for 11 years and, in doing so, became one of the county's most recognisable GAA figures.

May he rest in peace.
