Historic first for Clonguish

September 29, 2003
Clonguish..........3-9 Wolfe Tones.....1-5 Clonguish captured their first Longford senior hurling championship title on Saturday, September 27, when they powered to a surprisingly comfortable victory over holders Wolfe Tones. Two goals in the space of four minutes early in the second half from team captain John Minnock and county football star Paul Barden put the Newtownforbes men on the road to an historic victory. Wolfe Tones' hopes of retaining the title suffered a major setback when key forward Mark Cassidy received a red card midway through the first half and they found themselves 0-3 to 0-5 in arrears at the interval. The second half was dominated by Clonguish who added a 3-4 to their tally. Ciaran Finnucane's goal in the 45th minute put the result beyond all doubt and Clonguish will now be hoping to complete a rare senior double when their footballers meet Ballymahon in the county final replay next Sunday, October 5.
