Lennon earns replay for Ballymahon

September 22, 2003
Ballymahon.....1-8 Clonguish.......0-11 Holders Ballymahon lived to fight another day after a fisted point by substitute John Lennon deep into injury-time earned them a draw with arch rivals Clonguish in the Longford senior football final at Pearse Park on Sunday, September 21. In a disappointing contest, Roscommon star Frankie Dolan got Ballymahon off to a flying start with two early points. However, Clonguish hit back with four unanswered points, three of which came from Paul Barden. Ballymahon regained the lead in the 20th minute when Longford captain Trevor Smullen flicked an Edwin Nally centre to the corner of the net. But the Newtownforbes men regained the upperhand to take a 0-7 to 1-3 into the break. The second half developed into a shoot-out between Smullen and Barden. When Barden dispossessed full back Ken Lovelle to kick the lead point two minutes into stoppage-time, it looked as though Clonguish would claim their first senior title in 22 years. However, Ballymahon fought back to force a replay which has been fixed for Sunday, October 5.
