April 17, 2012
Dromard
On Saturday last our seniors played Clonguish in round 3 of division 1 in Pairc na Gael. The evening was dry with a slight breeze that favoured the visitors in the opening half. We trailed by 3pts to nil before we got our first score on the board - a Cían Mimnagh point from a free. This was followed by a Diarmuid Masterson point from play. Our opponents landed a further 3 points from play before Declan Mimnagh found the net after a good build up. Points were exchanged before a second Declan Mimnagh goal tied up the game. A pointed free left us ahead at half time Dromard 2-04 Clonguish 0-09. The men in green had the better of the opening stages of the second half scoring the opening 3 points of the second half to take the lead. We came back to level but the closing stages were hard fought but it was the visitors who landed late points to seal the victory. Killoe gained the initiative in the second and went on to claim the points on the score line of Dromard 1-07 Killoe 0-14. Despite playing some very good passages of football we trailed at half time 1-07 to 1-03 with our goal coming from Peadar Kiernan. The second half saw our young team continue to battle but it was the visitors that finished on top at the final whistle. Team on the evening was Barry Smith, Cillian Hourican, Brian Kiernan, Barry Connell, Liam Doherty, Dylan Masterson, Conal Murphy, Peadar Kiernan, Martin McStay, Oisín Hourican, Patrick Mimnagh. Sub used; Mark Donohoe. Next game is at home to St. Mel's this Tuesday at 7pm. On Wednesday our under 8's took part in their first blitz of the season that was held in Killoe. The home side scored 1-02 before Oisín Hourican landed a point from play. Our opponents held a 2-04 to 0-04 lead. Our boys responded well and got an unanswered 1-03 to leave the half time score of St. Francis 1-07 Clonbroney 2-05. Plenty of goals were scored in the second period with Dylan McCormack (2) and Ronan Bleakley the Dromard scorers. On Sunday our minors had Ballymahon/Forgney as visitors. In a game that we could have done better in, there were good performances from Eóin McNerney, Stephen Kenny, Ronan Smith, and Peter Mimnagh. They game was evenly contested throughout and a bit more competiveness and work would have got us across the line. It was a reasonable performance considering we were missing a few key players on the day and a few who played were carrying injuries or recovering from illness, namely Conal Murphy, Robert Cooke, Niall McManus, and Bryan McCormack. Our final game is next week-end will now be a key game for us if we plan to set a standard for the season ahead. Team and scorers; Eóin McNerney, Stephen Kenny, Cillian Hourican, Barry Connell, Ronan Smith, Niall McManus (0-01), Dylan Masterson, Peadar Kiernan (0-01), Brian McCormack (0-01), Liam Doherty, Peter Mimnagh (1-03) 3 frees, Conal Murphy (0-01). We wish a speedy recovery to the Ballymahon/Forgney player who picked up an injury during the course of the game. Next minor fixture is at home against Granard/Ballymore on Sunday next. Hard luck to Longford minors on Saturday last, who were defeated by Meath in a close encounter on Saturday last. Best of luck in the qualifiers. Well done to Ross McNerney who has the distinction of captaining the team. We offer our condolences to the Reynolds family Garvey on their recent bereavement. Sincere sympathies to Tommy O Hara on the passing of his uncle over the past week.
