O'Byrne Cup: DCU goals undo Longford
January 16, 2012
DCU qualified for an O'Byrne Cup semi-final meeting with Meath after second half goals from Jack Brady and Donal Smith helped them to victory over Longford at Ballymahon.
DCU 2-11
Longford 0-12
The students signalled their intentions with three early points from David Kelly, Dean Rock and Gary Sweeney, but with Sean McCormack in unerring form from placed balls, Longford fought back to level the scoring at half-time, 0-8 apiece.
DCU made a major breakthrough eight minutes into the second half when Brady was on hand to palm the ball to net after Martin McElhinney's initial attempt for a point came back off the upright.
Longford hit back with four unanswered points from Paul Kelly and three-in-a-row from McCormack, but they failed to score in the closing 20 minute as Smith sealed victory with a second goal for Niall Moyna's side 15 minutes from the end.
