Magee not taking Longford champions for granted

Joint-manager Johnny Magee says there is no danger of Kilmacud Crokes taking Mullinalaghta for granted in the Leinster club SFC final on December 9.

The provincial decider will pit one of the biggest clubs in the country against one of the smallest, but Magee stressed after yesterday's dramatic semi-final win over Portlaoise that Crokes wouldn't be underestimating the three-in-a-row Longford champions.

“No way,” he said in the Irish Examiner.

“We genuinely hadn’t looked past this one. Mullinalaghta will pose a big threat like any team in a Leinster final. These games are there to be won. It’s 60-odd minutes again and 15-on-15 so we’ll pay them the respect they deserve like every opposition we’ve played this year. We’ll go and do our homework on them.”

The former Dublin centre back cut a relieved figure after goalkeeper David Nestor saved an injury-time penalty from Craig Rogers to deny Portlaoise extra-time.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to get there, but we got there," he continued.

"We're a very young side, this is the first run in Leinster for a lot of these guys and we were playing a very good Portlaoise, a very good footballing team, very experienced, and you could see that in how they played.

"We were a bit naive, bringing the ball into contact and inviting trouble onto ourselves but when we did move the ball quickly and effectively we caused them problems."
