Patrickswell GAA notes
August 18, 2008
The Under 21s made a winning start in the City Hurling A Championship against Ballybrown in Clarina. The opening stages were played in wet and slippery conditions as both sides struggled to maintain possession. The hosts scored three consecutive points before Patrickswell responded with a goal themselves. Ballybrown were favoured by a strong breeze in the first half and established a three-point lead of 0-8 to 1-2 with 25 minutes gone. However, the Well scored a second goal before the interval to draw level. There was sufficient time for Ballybrown to notch a further point and claim a 0-9 to 2-2 half-time lead.
The rain cleared at the start of the second half as the game remained on a knife-edge. Patrickswell and Ballybrown were level on five separate occasions as they traded points in quick succession. Neither team could build a decisive advantage and the score stood at 2-8 to 0-14 with two minutes remaining. With a draw on the cards, Patrickswell launched a hopeful attack down the right flank. The angle towards goal seemed impossible, however the shot was beautifully despatched into the far corner of the net. Patrickswell had snatched a victory by 3-8 to 0-14 at the death. Despite five minutes of injury time, there were no further scores.
In the quarter final of the Senior Hurling County championship, Patrickswell will face Kilmallock next month. The Minor hurlers have qualified for the semi-final of the Premier competition after Na Piarsaigh forfeited. The Junior B hurlers lost to Claughaun by 2-11 to 1-4 in their City Hurling Championship fixture. The remaining Under 16 fixtures have been deferred until September.
