Pallaskenry GAA Club Notes

CONGRATULATIONS
All in Pallaskenry GAA would like to congratulate Sean O'Neill on his tremendous achievement in qualifying for and then being named on the Irish Rowing Team to take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing next month. Sean will be part of the Heavyweight Coxless Four Boat that takes to the water between August 9th & 17th. He was instrumental as the team secured qualification at last years' World Championships and will take the stroke seat in a team that sees two changes from the crew that secured qualification. Sean will pay a brief visit home this weekend with a social gathering scheduled for this Thursday evening in the Community Centre @ 8pm organised by the Community Council to wish Sean all the best.

COUNTY JUNIOR B HURLING LEAGUE SEMI FINAL
Pallaskenry 1-07 Bruree 3-10.
Two goals just before half time gave Bruree victory in this much delayed County Semi Final played in Mungret last Wednesday evening. Having been postponed twice and a further venue change last Wednesday there was more frustration before the throw-in as the referee arrived almost thirty minutes late. When the action did get going both teams matched each other early on as Bruree opened up an early two point lead before Kenny Rogers hit three points (0-2 frees) to give us the lead after twenty minutes. Rogers hit another pointed free to cancel out a Bruree point but Bruree finished the half the stronger scoring four further points followed by those two goals in the last minute of the half. This was a disastrous finish to the half as we looked to be solid across the full back line for much of the first half.
Two changes at half time failed to stem the Bruree attack as they goaled within two minutes and added two points to lead by fourteen points before Daniel Hannon went on a wonderful run to score a point in the twelfth minute. Rogers added further points as the game petered out as a contest before another good run by Hannon late on was finished to the net by Emmett O'Brien who had moved to full forward. It was a case of another match at County level and another demoralising defeat that left the travelling support wondering what it would take to win a match at this level. With a place in the City C'Ship semi final already secured hopefully it won't be long before we get another chance to finally prove ourselves at this level.

KILLULTA GAELS
CITY/EAST MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 6
Killulta Gaels 2-23 Claughaun 3-05.
This was another fine performance as our minor hurlers showed what they're capable off despite having to pick from a small squad. Having had no match the previous week as Monaleen were forced to withdraw having given two walkovers earlier in the competition we returned to action in Kildimo last Friday refreshed. Coaches Denis O'Brien, James Carey & Emmett O'Brien had the players flying from the start and when Chris McMahon flicked the ball to the net following good work by Ronan Liston there was already a gap opening up. Cian Hayes and Darren Walsh dealt well with the Claughaun attack as Seamus McKeogh and Ronan Liston cleaned up around the middle to set up attack after attack. Unfortunately Pa McCarthy was forced off injured midway through the first half to be replaced by Daniel Hannon who made the most of the opportunity as he won good possession and found our talisman Willie Griffin in good position. It was Griffin who once again proved deadly accurate from play and placed balls as he racked up an impressive tally to maintain our unbeaten record with three matches remaining. Daniel Maher in goals, James Carey, Peter Nash, Stephen Hodnett and Robert McKeogh all played well and next up is the short trip to Clarina to play Ballybrown on Friday week, August 1st.
Team: Daniel Maher, Cian Hayes, Stephen Hodnett, James Carey, Brian Howard, Darren Walsh, Peter Nash, Ronan Liston(0-1), Seamus McKeogh(0-2), Robert McKeogh, Chris McMahon(0-1), Tommy Brett, Pat McCarthy, Eoin O'Brien, Willie Griffin (1-18)
Sub: Daniel Hannon(0-1) for P McCarthy after 15mins.
Referee Trevor Mann (Ballybrown).
CITY MINOR FOOTBALL C'SHIP ROUND 3
NA PIARSAIGH 3-10 KILLULTA GAELS 0-7.
This was a game that was very much for the taking but some poor shot selection and bizarre refereeing saw us leave Caherdavin with a heavy defeat that did little justice to the performance. We started well with a point from Shane O'Brien before Na Piarsaigh caught our defence napping to goal, Shane added another point following good work by Peter Nash but Na Piarsaigh scored a couple of points of their own to lead midway through the first half. Daniel Hannon then added a point which was set up by Shane O'Brien before James Carey & Ciaran Ryan efforts brought us within one point. Na Piarsaigh added one point before half time to lead by two, 0-5 to 1-4.
Na Piarsaigh got off to a good start in the second half before Jason Cahalane showed good strength to point on the turn and Shane O'Brien added a free to once again leave just a point between the sides with fifteen minutes to go. But then disaster struck as a Na Piarsaigh shot appeared to be cleaned off the line by Shane O'Brien but inexplicably the referee awarded a goal and Na Piarsaigh quickly added three points to pull away and win comfortably. Next up is an away match against Ballybrown on Friday August 8th with a place in the City Final still up for grabs.
Team: Stephen Hodnett, Brian Howard, Cian Hayes, Jack O'Connell, Mike Delap, Lorcan Fitzgerald, David Keating, Ronan Liston, Darren Walshe, Ciaran Ryan (0-1), James Carey (0-1), Shane O'Brien (0-3), Jason Cahalane (0-1), Daniel Hannon (0-1), Peter Nash. Subs: Chris McMahon, Danny Lynch, Marc Doyle.
