An umpire in today's All-Ireland SHC qualifier between Limerick and Westmeath got a call spectacularly wrong.

Footage shown on tonight's Sunday Game highlights show proved beyond any doubt that a shot by Limerick midfielder Paul Browne was off target yet the green flag was raised at a critical juncture in the game.

The Shannonsiders finished with 12 points to spare but Lake County management, players and supporters have every reason to feel hard done by after watching tonight's show.

Browne's "goal" just after half-time left the hosts trailing by five points and facing an uphill battle.

"Pretty incredible," was Donal Og Cusack's reaction.

"Referee looking at it, you have an umpire two yards away from it, a sliotar does travel fast but it's inexcusable really. There would want to be serious questions asked over that decision."

Down but not out was the attitude adopted by Westmeath manager Michael Ryan after the final whistle: "We have a lot to work with. We have a lot of potential in that team, fellas who want to hurl for Westmeath and do really well so I'm confident we can move things on much further."
