ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Successful AGM reflects on the year past and plans for the year ahead!

The AGM of the club took place at the club meeting room on Saturday before an attendance of 29. Outgoing chairperson Jimmy Lee presided. In his address, he welcomed the delegates and reflected on a busy year for all involved on and off the field of play. There was much to be happy about and issues to be addressed as was the theme of his State of the Club assessment.

Teams were fielded in hurling and football, from beginners to senior (football) and intermediate (hurling) and that was no mean feat, even if there was a limited amount of silverware to show for all the hard work that was put in by players and mentors. Of course there was silverware, with West Championship titles won by the senior footballers and minor hurlers, and a Premier Co U21 Football title coming the way of the Newcastle West/Monagea combination, a return many clubs would be happy with and indicative of the efforts to balance the often conflicting demands of hurling and football. Further positives were that our facilities were in demand and capable of meeting that demand, with the County Senior and Minor Football Finals hosted expertly, a County Senior Hurling Champion-ship game hosted equally well, and praise forth-coming for the hosting from patrons, County Board officers and the Press. Paddy McCoy, Seán Roche and their Fields Committee received the praise they deserved.

Another plus was that the club was in the black, thanks to the efforts of   our treasurer Maurice McAuliffe and his hard-working team, and the generosity of the sponsors and public in supporting the various fundraisers including the weekly lottery, the Golf Classic, the Mackey Draw and the church gate collection. To achieve that state of affairs required huge input from a lot of people and Jimmy praised all the people who gave that input. All was not rosy in the garden, of course, and as in any organisation, institution, family there were problems, a tension or two, flies in the ointment. However, the glass was more than half full. Jimmy concluded his well received address by thank-ing all who had contributed to a busy and enjoyable two years in the chair for him and encouraged all to "put shoulders to the wheel again in 2015!"

Margaret Hannan, sec-retary, gave a comprehen-sive account of on and off field happenings in 2014. The progress of teams from senior football to minor, from inter hurling to minor, was described in detail. As mentioned above two Wests and one County title were won and we were not far off in a number of cases, not a bad place to be in. Margaret gave credit to all involved players, mentors, supporters. She gave a rundown on field business also, referred to the hard work of the Fin-ance Committee, headed by Maurice and Martin O'Sullivan, and delivered the deserved pats on the back to the various/many conscientious and committed stakeholders whose hard work often goes unnoticed. Finally, she thanked her fellow officers, her family and all who helped make her time as secretary easier and more enjoyable.

Derry McMahon delivered the Treasurer's Report. It showed the club in the black, to the delight of all in the attendance. The healthy state of the finances was due in no small way to the diligence, hard work of treasurer Maurice McAul-iffe and his finance committee and to the support of sponsors and the general public.  Derry reminded all (as if the 'all' needed reminding) that even though we were in the black we hadn't millions in the bank, and a bail out could be required if strict regulation was not in force and we weren't careful and prudent with our finances. The delegates, familiar with the austerity of the last decade or so, under-stood the situation perfectly. The treasurer's report precise, detailed was a model of its kind.

Derry McMahon delivered the Coiste na nÓg Report. There was no silverware to report after a busy year in hurling and football, though we were there or thereabouts at many levels in both games. However, silverware or the lack of it doesn't always give the full story, and the full story is that mentors and players put in a huge amount of work from beginners to U16s in hurling and football, enriching the lives of all involved, keeping the national games alive in the parish, giving all players an opportunity to play the games. Full credit to the stakeholders, the players, mentors, parents, Coiste officers. Hopefully, there will be equal commitment, enthusiasm, focus, idealism in 2015.

The delegates, after a good debate, decided that a football panel of 26 should be named for senior duty and that there should be one selector in common between Junior/Senior Football, and Intermediate/Junior B Hurling. A motion to name a squad for intermediate hurling duty was defeated. The objective of the motions renaming squads for the respective flagship teams was obviously to ensure that there would be strong first and second teams, thus benefitting adult football and hurling. A situation desirable to all.

The AGM elected the following officers for 2015: Chairperson Derry McMahon, Secretary Mar-garet Hannan, Treasurer Maurice McAuliffe, Facilities Seán Roche, Coaching Officer Vincent Sheehan. A number of positions were not filled, but appointments will be made in due course. Chair Jimmy Lee stepped down after two years in the demanding position and received fully deserved praise for his commitment and hard work over the two years. Others standing down were Vice Chair Peter Curtin, PRO John Collins, Asst. Secretary Nicole Nix, Fundraising Co-ordinators Martin Sullivan and their out-standing efforts over the year also received the praise they deserved.

A committee will be appointed to select the various managers and these various managers will be announced in due course.

All in all, the 2014 AGM conducted its business efficiently, professionally, effectively and well done to all involved. All look forward to a successful, enjoyable 2015 where our teams in hurling and football train well, give 100% on the field of play (silverware or no silverware) all youngsters of the parish are given an opportunity to play the native games, the club keeps its head above water financially and remains the vibrant, inclusive, busy club it has always striven to be. As the famous poet said "Fare Forward Voyagers"!

INTERCOUNTY

SENIOR HURLING

WATERFORD

CRYSTAL SEMI

FINAL/FINAL

Limerick ...................0-22

UCC ..........................1-17

Limerick v Cork

Limerick and UCC played a competitive, skilful and competitive semi final at Kilmallock on Saturday last. At the same time, 25 miles away in Mallow, Jimmy Barry Murphy's Cork were putting 2-21 on the board to 0-18 for the 2013 All Ireland Cham-pions. So it's Limerick v the Rebels on Saturday (?) next, probably at 2pm, probably at Mallow or Kilmallock. Excellent preparation in advance of the National League, Round 1 in which Limerick oppose Waterford - a game that could determine whether they escape or remain in the second division.

INTERCOUNTY

SENIOR FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 3, ROUND 1

Limerick v Sligo

The field is the venue on Sunday next with a 2pm throw-in. However, the recent McGrath Cup game, Limerick v UCC, was switched to Mick Neville Park after playing conditions at the field became less favourable due to bad weather. If the weather from this midweek on is as bad as is forecast, a switch to the Gaelic Grounds is likely, time will tell. Limerick struggle v UCC in the McGrath Cup. However, they have generally been neck and neck with Sligo and should be in with a good chance of getting full points this time round, though the retired John Galvin (we wish Limerick's best ever footballer a happy retirement) and the injured Ian Ryan will be huge losses. Club player Ian Corbett is likely to start, while another club player Jamie Lee will probably get a run if recovered from injury. Declan Brouder is a selector.

PREMIER CO U21 FOOTBALL FINAL

A DVD, which includes the drawn game and the replay (which Newcastle West/Monagea won comfortably) is now available from George and Kevin Daly, price €15.

SYMPATHY

All in the club extend sympathy to Mike Quilligan senior, (senior football manager 2014) and to the Falvey and Quilligan families on the death of Mike's sister Mrs. Margaret Falvey. The late Margaret is mother of Jimmy Falvey, one of the club's best ever underage footballer. May she rest in peace.
