Ahane Minor Hurling Manager, Davey Givens congratulating his panel after they secured a victory against Doon under lights in the Gaelic Grounds

Ahane minors made the short trip to the Gaelic Grounds last Wednesday week to face Doon under lights in the County Premier Minor Hurling semi-final. Both clubs had come out on the wrong side in their respective senior hurling county semi-finals the previous week-end and were anxious to ensure pride was restored in these East Limerick hurling strongholds. Before the match, hurling talk in the big crowd in the stand was questioning a €15 entry fee to the senior semi-finals and an €8 entry fee to the minor games that evening, surely a step too far by the county board!

Money matters discussed and parked for the time being, the match started with the Ahane marksman Tom Morrissey getting proceedings underway with 2 quick points. Ahane definitely made the more comfortable start with centre-field duo of Ciaran O'Mara and James Tuohy providing much ball into the Ahane forward division. Brothers Mark and Paul O'Halloran then added a brace of well worked points in that opening 15-minute period. Doon soon found their scoring sights and pulled Ahane back to within a point by half time on a score-line of 8-points to 1-4. Adam O'Brien in the Ahane goal and the Ahane full-back line of Michael Fox, Evan Enright and Ciaran Barry did extremely well to smother numerous Doon attacks in that first half.

The second half was a much tighter affair. Colm Carroll, Paddy Morrissey and Shane Hackett in the Ahane half back line were fully tested and passed with Morrissey in particular relishing his task in the centre back berth. In the full forward line Pat Minihan and Arron Hackett tried hard but the scores were extremely hard to come by. The break through came for Ahane when Mikey Power raced onto a ball broken at centre field and struck a low shot towards the full forward line. This ball rebounded directly into the path of the on rushing Paul O'Halloran who promptly buried it in the back of the Doon net. Doon never gave up though and their more aggressive fighting for the ball on the ground resulted in them entering the final 5 minutes 2 points ahead of Ahane. Ahane's never say die attitude won through in those final minutes and with the backs holding strong, Ahane pulled back point after point and then having pulled a ball out of the sky under severe pressure Paul O'Halloran was fouled as he headed for goal. Tom Morrissey pointed the resultant free to give Ahane a victory by the finest of margins and a coveted place in the county final.

In the Final, Ahane played Monagea. Ahane were first off the mark with a point from Fiona Herbert and Monagea responded with a point. Ahane's Ella Ryan added another to leave the half time score: Ahane 0-2 Monagea 0-1. Ahane were playing great football and in the second half added three more points from Fiona Herbert, while Monagea responded scoring one point to leave the final score: Ahane 0-5 Monagea 0-2. Well done to both teams on a great game of football. Credit must go to this young Ahane Team: Hannah Keane, was superb in goals, with the backs of Rachel Donnellan, Caoimhe Lenehan, Niamh Brennan and Aoife Whelan, displaying an array of skills in blocking and moving the ball forward to our midfield duo of Aine Herbert and Jessica O'Shea, who combined brilliantly together to catch and supply quality ball to our forwards of Fiona Herbert, Kate Clohessy, Ella Ryan, Emma Thomas and Roisin Lenehan, who combined great teamwork to setup Ahane's excellent scores. Rosaleen Creamer on behalf of the County Board, presented the victorious Ahane Team with the Cup. There were great scenes of jubilation in Rathkeale. Ahane last won the Cup in 2010, when members of our current Under 14 and Under 16 Teams Played. Our thanks to all the parents who came and supported the girls. Ahane Panel: Kate Clohessy, Fiona Herbert, Aine Herbert, Caoimhe Lenehan, Hannah Keane, Aoife Whelan, Jessica O'Shea, Emma Thomas, Rachel Donnellan, Ella Ryan, Niamh Brennan and Roisin Lenehan.
