LATE GOAL PUTS TORY GAELS INTO THE FINAL

MINOR FOOTBALL PREMIER
CO. CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL
Newcastle West ..................................1-9
Tory Gaels ..........................................2-9

Ballybrown was the venue on Saturday evening and Michael Woulfe refereed. Conditions were excellent, though the dusk arrived before the game finished.
The Croom/Crecora combination, physically strong, pacy, skilful, determined and hardworking were well on top in the first half and were 1-9 to 0-6 ahead at half time. They were composed in possession, combined well, were more often than not first to the ball, adorned their general capability with some fine scores. We struggled in a big way, but nevertheless had enough pedigree to kick 0-5, AJ O'Connor (5th minute), Shane Stack (1 and (10), Brian Hurley (19) and (24) on target. Truth to tell we were a good bit shell shocked at half time and knew a big second half performance was required if we were to make the final. The big performance we hoped for materialised and playing with a lot more fire we closed the gap to 0-2, 1-7 to 1-9 by the end of the 3rd quarter, AJ (37) and Shane (41) kicking points and Darragh Quilligan goaling spectacularly at 44. Two minutes into the final quarter we were on level terms (Shane 47, AJ 48. Tory Gaels were getting undisciplined (2 red cards, second yellows in both cases) and the victory we anticipated seemed likely. However, despite a 15-13 numerical advantage and enjoying majority possession we failed to put scores on the board, taking the wrong shooting options (going for goals when points were for the taking), individuals taking too much out of the ball, not passing when passing was the best option and the woodwork, three of the reasons why we failed to score from a monopoly of possession in the final twelve minutes of normal time and two of t.a.o. Then, as happens often in such cases with the team under pressure, the thirteen brave hearts from the neighbouring parishes, who in the midst of all their woes never dropped the heads, effected a turnover, worked the leather up the field, knocked a tentative ball across the goal where a waiting forward Ryan McHugh-like fisted to the net for a real opportunist score. Credit is due to our lads, they responded well, worked the ball up the field. However they were unable to engineer the goal that was needed and Tory Gaels, tails up and battling and very spirited held on for a famous win and a place in the final. A game of two halves. Tory Gaels were well on top in the first half and taking every scoring chance. Our lads were on top in the second half but did not make it tell on the scoreboard; qualification and exit the results respectively! The players will be haunted by the outcome for a while, knowing it was the one that got away. In the final analysis, having been caught napping, they gave it everything, nearly made it (like Mayo).
Team: Andy Brouder, Kieran Nix, Darren O'Doherty, Darragh McMahon, Killian McMahon, William Hurley, Conor Barry, AJ O'Connor 0-3, Brian Hurley 0-2, Shane Stack 0-4, Caleb O'Shea, Eoin Sheridan, Liam McCartan, Shane Lee. Subs: Conor O'Sullivan, Jack Downey, Ronan Creedon, Lee Woulfe, Adam Harrington, Darragh Quilligan 1-0.

Minor Hurling West A            and B Championships
We're into the A semi-final, our opponents likely to be Deel Rangers or Tournafulla. It is not confirmed but it's thought that the semi-finals may be on at the weekend.

Senior football Co.
Quarter Final
Newcastle West v
Ballylanders
Kilmallock is the venue on Saturday next at 4p.m. The teams have a history of close, hard fought, down to the wire contests. Saturday's game will not be for the fainthearted either, with Bally's well known physicality opposing our route 1 game where pace is central. If we can keep it going for the full sixty minutes plus the high tempo game that suits us we'll be hard to beat. Training continues.

Intermediate Hurling
Co. Championship Round 5
Newcastle West v
Glenroe
On the long finger awaiting the playing of Glenroe v Claughaun which was postponed due to the involvement of one of the Claughaun players with Limerick minors. Since his return Glenroe have defeated Claughaun. Ourselves v Glen is now on the second long finger due to the football quarter final. Training continues.

Casey's, Drom/Broadford, Sean Finn's, St. Kieran's the teams in pole position.

U16 Hurling Division 2           Co. Championship
Semi-final
Newcastle West v
Pallasgreen
Kilmallock next Sunday is the venue after the All Ireland, probably at 6.30p.m. The semi-final was postponed on Sunday last due to its proximity to Saturday's county minor football semi-final. Pallasgreen are famed for the intensity and commitment of their hurling. They give 100% and are never beaten until the final whistle. Cian Magner-Flynn and Micheál Begley, both Killeedy, are big additions to our team. Unfortunately Seamus Hurley, the very able centre/full back, misses out because of injury. A quality game is guaranteed.

Camogie All Ireland
Intermediate
Championship Final
Limerick.......................1-2
Kilkenny....................0-10
Former Newcastle West GAA Club hurler and coach Ger Sheehy was trainer/selector with Limerick at Croke Park on Sunday. (George Fitzgibbon, former Newcastle West hurling coach was involved with the senior title winning Cork team). Also selecting with the successful Limerick team was Ann Herbert, while players involved were Rebecca Delee 0-2 at right half forward and centre forward respectively, Karen O'Leary who joined the game in the last quarter and Leanne Browne on the bench. All three were starters on the Limerick minor team that won a first All Ireland A title earlier in the year, while Leanne lined out at number 2 with the junior team that won both the Division 4 National League and the All Ireland Junior A Championship. A super year for Limerick and Newcastle West camogie.

U10 hurling blitz in Banteer
Our troops were on the road last weekend and went to a very exciting blitz held by the Banteer club in North Cork. This was a blitz with 16 teams from all over Munster including Waterford, Cork and Limerick clubs. We played 3 games of 10 minutes a side. Our first match was against Eire Og from Ovens in Cork, second was against Ballygarvan from Cork and third against Newmarket from Cork.

NCW v Eire Og
Our boys were really fired up from the start and we took control of the game early, however  we were finding it hard to get scores in the first half. In the second half we found our stride and Dylan Scanlon in particular gave an exhibition of point taking. We ran out winners 1-6 to 0-1. Most impressive in this game was how our boys tackled in packs and forced a lot of frees and turnovers.

NCW v Ballygarvan
This was a really tough physical encounter as Ballygarvan were a very big size for this age group. They got a few early goals in the first half and we struggled to get to grips with their strength. They ended up winning comfortably.

NCW v Newmarket
At this stage in the baking sun, we were expecting our lads to be tiring but they were fantastic in this last game as they battled to the end. Newmarket led 1-1 to 0-0 at half time but our boys put in a massive effort to get back to within one point. However the final whistle came a minute too soon and we went down by the narrowest of margins.
Overall it was a very high standard of hurling and it was a great learning experience for the lads. The most  satisfying aspect was how the lads all battled their hearts out and showed great pride in the jersey. Next Saturday we are off to Holycross in Tipperary to fly the flag against some of the most famed clubs in hurling like Thurles, Clonoulty-Rossmore and Holycross-Ballycahill.
Team: Jamie O'Regan, Seán Geraghty, Ethan Kirwan, James Lyons, Conor Walsh, Aaron Neville, Con Hayes, Paul Begley, Dylan Scanlon, Emmet Righter, John O'Grady, Aaron Mullane, Oisin Collins,  Kasper Bochnak, Jack Kelly, Harry Edwards, Padraig Sheedy and Fionn Ahearn
