East Senior Hurling Cup Final Result, Ahane 1-18 South Liberties 0-16

Ahane Senior Hurling Captain, Dan Morrissey accepting the East Limerick Senior Hurling Cup from East Senior Bórd Chairman Louise Quirke in Caherconlish this evening after beating South Liberties in a hotly contested final.

Ahane senior hurlers came out victorious in a closely contested East Limerick Cup final against South Liberties in Caherconlish this evening. The match started at a high pace with Ahane's Pat Meskell and South Liberties Shane O'Neill exchanging early points. As the first half progressed it became clear that South Liberties meant business with the Ahane defence put under sustained pressure. Jonathan Hayes in goals and the full-back line of Jeffrey Enright, Pauric Treacy and Mike Hayes put to the pin of their collar to ensure the green flag was not raised with Hayes in particular prominent in denying Liberties a certain goal by a committed hook on Liberties corner forward Ciaran Carberry. Gussy Aherne and Seamus Harnett did well in the wing back berths marking the South Liberties ace duo of Barry Nash and Mark Keane. Score of the game has to go to Tom Morrissey who picked a ball high out of the air in a well timed diagonal run and in the same continuous movement stroked the ball over the bar to prove his growing inter county pedigree.

Referee Denis Richardson blew the half time whistle with both teams on level pegging at 8 points all. Ahane mentors John Kennedy, Dave Cuddy and Clem Smith kept their charges on the pitch during the half time break and their concern was obvious as they were very animated in the huddle sending the Ahane boys back out to face a strong breeze.

The Ahane Limerick minors Paul O'Halloran and Paddy Morrissey came more and more into the game in the second half although O'Halloran had to mind himself after picking up a yellow card half way through the second half. Killian Enright was a constant thorn in the side of the Liberties defence and Richie Ryan in the Ahane full forward position started to run at the Liberties defence and Ahane picked up multiple frees as a result with Niall Moran converting all the frees having taking up the free taking duties for the evening. Ahane continued to struggle through the early part of the second half but the tide started to turn when Ahane's center back Johnny Meskell started to take a lot of ball out of defence and Ahane's Captain Dan Morrissey gave a man of the match performance by cleaning up so many of the loose ball and contested puck-outs and provided so much possession that ultimately resulted in the match winning goal from Tom Morrissey.

And so it finished with a 1-18 to 16points victory to Ahane. East Limerick Bórd Chairman Louise Quirke complimented both teams on a great and fairly contested match. Dan Morrissey accepted the cup from Louise and commended the East Bórd on providing both clubs with competitive games in the run up to the county championship proper. Ahane and South Liberties are in different groups in the championship with Ahane facing Patrickswell in their first outing in 3 weeks time.

The Ahane squad on the night was Jonathan Hayes, Mike Hayes, Pauric Tracey, Jeffrey Enright, Fergus Aherne, John Meskell, Seamus Harnett, Paddy Morrissey, Pa Meskell, Paul O'Halloran, Dan Morrissey (capt), Niall Moran, Killian Enright, Richie Ryan, Tom Morrissey, Adam O'Brien, John Doheny, Stephen Power, Conor Quirke, Brian Collins, David Laing, Niall Collins, Tom Doheny, Ciaran O'Mara, Colum Carroll, Mark Foley, Enda Carroll, Sean Madden

Credit to both sides for an excellent match.
